Many of these onsen come from Jigokudani (Hell Valley), which was created by volcanic activity about 10,000 years ago. 登別溫泉為日本最北邊的大規模溫泉鄉 Noboribetsu Onsen is the northernmost large scale onsen resort in Japan.

- 據說地獄谷裡，棲息著守護著藥湯的「鬼神」，其名為「湯鬼神」。「湯鬼神」們遵照與「蝦夷之神」訂下的命運之約，於夏日第八十八天，順應時節之風吹起時，為了居住於地界的人們，高舉鬼火火炬，現身於地獄谷 It is said that Jigokudani is inhabited by demon gods who guard the medicinal baths. The name of these demon gods is Yukijin. The Yukijin, according to their destiny placed upon them by the Ezo Gods, appear in Jigokudani on the eighty-eighth night after the first day of spring, when the Tokitsukaze blows, with torches burning for the people living in the earthly realm.

- 由日和山火山噴發所形成，為直徑約 450 m，面積約 11 公頃的爆裂火口痕跡。沿著山谷出現為數眾多的溫泉湧出口與噴氣孔，泉水沸騰不斷冒泡泡的模樣，仿佛像是「鬼棲息的地獄」，為其命名由來。這裡有眾多種類的溫泉，一天湧出量高達一萬噸以上，為溫泉街飯店與旅館提供溫泉來源 This is the site of a 450-meter diameter, 11-hectare crater created by the volcanic activity of Mt. Hiyori. There are numerous openings and fumaroles along the valley, and the scenery of bubbling and boiling water inspired the name “Oni no sumu jigoku” (Where the demon’s live). As much as 10,000 tons of hot spring water of various types gush out of this area every day, which is supplied to hotels and inns in the hot spring resort.

- 周長約 1 km 的葫蘆型沼澤，為日和山水蒸氣爆發所形成的爆裂火口痕跡。約 130℃ 高溫的硫磺泉從沼澤底部激烈噴出，表面溫度也有約 40℃~50℃，呈現灰黑色，以前曾經開採沼澤底部所堆積的「硫磺」 Oyunuma is a gourd-shaped lake with a circumference of about 1km, which is the remains of a crater formed due to the eruption of Mt. Hiyori. At the bottom of the lake, sulfur springs of about 130℃ spout out intensely, and even the surface temperature is about 40℃ to 50℃ with a grayish-black color.

- 位於地獄谷接近中心位置的小間歇泉。雖然現在看不到像以前那般泉水噴發的景象，但從途中木棧道所見到的溫泉河川，可以深刻感受到自己正位於溫泉源頭地 This is a small geyser located around the middle of Jigokudani. You can’t see the geyser spouting as much as before, but you can experience being at the hot spring source by looking at the river of hot water from the wooden path along the way.

- 奧之湯是日和山爆裂火口痕跡的一部分，被稱作「Fuki」的圓錐型沼澤底部激烈噴發出灰黑色硫磺泉。沼澤表面高達 75℃~85℃，特別是沼澤前方與中央附近的噴發尤其激烈，猶如沸騰的熱水鍋 Okunoyu is a grayish-black sulfur spring gushing out from the bottom of a cone-shaped pond called “Fuki”, which is part of the crater made by the eruption of Mt Hiyori. The surface temperature of the pond is as high as 75℃ to 85℃, giving it the appearance of a boiling kettle of water.

- 酷寒嚴冬裡，為了感謝「溫泉」的豐沛水量與自豪的多樣化泉質，並祈求泉水源源不絕，永續繁榮以及祛病消災，而舉辦本祭典。2 月 4 日當天，身穿兜襠布的青年們，激烈地互潑溫泉水進行「潑溫泉合戰」以及「道祖神裸行進」 This festival expresses gratitude for the abundance and variety of hot spring water during the bitterly cold winter, and also includes prayers for prosperity and good health so that the hot spring water will never run out. On the 4th, young men in loincloths compete fiercely to pour hot water over each other in the Gensen Yukake Gassen and Dosojin Hadaka Nerikomi.

- 為了祈求幸福，趕走人們厄運，將施放鬼煙火。從古流傳至今的鬼煙火傳說中，棲息於地獄谷的「湯鬼神」們，將於夜空中施放鬼煙火，如同火山噴發般的畫面，魄力十足 The fireworks are launched with the hope that they will bring happiness and carry away people’s troubles. The Yukijin (hot spring demon gods) who live in Jigokudani, where the legend of Demon Fireworks has been passed down through the generations, release powerful Demon Fireworks into the night sky, resembling a volcanic eruption.

- 登別地獄祭舉辦於每年 8 月的最後一個週六．週日，屆時地獄谷的地獄鍋蓋將會打開，閻魔王將率領惡鬼們造訪登別溫泉，本祭典便是根據此傳說而誕生。舉辦登別太鼓、由登別市立登別國中學生所抬起的赤鬼神轎，與鬼舞表演等活動，只有一年一度的地獄祭當天，才能親眼目睹閻魔大王遊行於溫泉街極樂大道，非常值得一看 Noboribetsu Jigoku Matsuri is a festival based on the legend that on the last Saturday and Sunday of August every year, the lid of the cauldron of hell opens from Jigokudani (Hell Valley) in Noboribetsu Onsen, and the Great Demon King Enma visits Noboribetsu Onsen accompanied by his demons. The festival includes Noboribetsu taiko drums, a demon mikoshi portable shrine carried by students of Noboribetsu Junior High School, demon dancing, and more. The Great Demon King Enma parade through Gokuraku Street in the hot spring resort happens only once a year on the day of the Jigoku Matsuri, making it a must-see event.
