塩飽本島町是塩飽海軍和塩飽廻船の基地，是塩飽諸島最繁栄的港町之一。Shiwaku Honjima-cho is one of the most prosperous port towns in the Shiwaku Islands as a base for the Shiwaku Suigun and Shiwaku Kaisen.
本島地區作為彼時船員們的根據地，曾極盡繁華。隨著海運業的發展，造船工匠的技術也日漸精湛，至今在島上仍能隨處感受到當時的盛況，笠島的街道等懷舊又別有一番情趣的氛圍。Honjima prospered as the home of those seamen. Boatbuilding skills increased there as the shipping business developed. Traces of those skills still remain today. Honjima attracts many people as an island where the nostalgic and charming appearance of the row of old houses in Kasashima coexist with the modern view of the Seto Ohashi Bridge.
保存了 13 棟江戶時代和約 20 棟明治時代的建築物，大正和昭和初期的建築也保留了它們的傳統結構和設計。There are 13 buildings from the Edo period and about 20 from the Meiji era, but the Taisho and early Showa eras also retain their traditional structures and designs.
