Oiso Town Tangible Cultural Property

Former Yi Loyal Family Villa)

The current building was rebuilt by the Yi royal family in 1926 after the original building from the time of Ito Hirobumi was destroyed in the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923. The rebuilt building is a hybrid of Japanese and Western styles, combining both Western and Japanese-style rooms with a symmetrical exterior, and retains the modernism of the Taisho period.

Former Furukawa Villa

After purchasing it in 1897, it was renovated and used as a winter and summer resort. Although the building has been remodeled, the main parts of the residence, such as the “Jindai no Ma” (made of Jindai cedar), which Okuma Shigenobu used as his study, and the “Fuji no Ma” where the sociable Okuma is said to have often held parties, remain in their original form, making it a valuable historical heritage as a villa building from the time when Oiso was at its most developed as a villa area during the Meiji period.

Former Furukawa Villa

The current building was originally constructed in 1895, but was severely damaged in the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, and was rebuilt in 1930. The sukiya-style building is in a good state of preservation, retaining its elegant and tranquil appearance from its time. A plaque with the calligraphy “Chogyo-so” hangs at the entrance.

Former Ikeda Nariakira Villa

The current building was rebuilt after the Tokyo main residence of Ikeda Nariakira, who inherited the building from Saionji Koumochi, collapsed in the Great Kanto Earthquake. It is a genuine British-style Western-style building, and the layout has not been altered, preserving the original appearance from the time of completion. The sturdy reinforced concrete mansion conveys the architectural techniques of the early Showa period. It has been selected by the Architectural Institute of Japan as a “Famous Modern Architecture of the Taisho and Showa Periods” and also as one of the “Top 100 Buildings of Kanagawa.”
