- 在禁基督教時代之後，日本所有的天主教堂都被摧毀，横浜天主堂成為近代教会建築的先例， 1906 年，横浜天主堂從旧居留地(山下町)移転至山手町並重建，使大浦天主教堂成為日本現存最古老的教会建築，1879 年擴建整修，形成現在的外觀，内部、外観均為哥德式風格。It stands as the second Catholic church to be built in modern Japan, a period that followed the prohibition of Christianity in Japan and the subsequent destruction of all Catholic churches. The first Catholic church built in this modern era was the Yokohama Cathedral, which was moved from the old settlement (Yamashita-cho) to Yamate-cho and rebuilt in 1906, making Oura Cathedral the oldest surviving church building in Japan. In 1879, the cathedral underwent renovations and expansions, with both its interior and exterior being harmonized in the Gothic style.

- 建築為地上三層、部分地下一層建築物，充分利用斜坡地形，結構主要為磚造，部分採木結構 The building has a basement floor, as well as three further floors which are above ground. It is built takes advantage of the slope upon which it sits. It is mainly made of brick, although some wood has also been used.
