Because it was built in the northern part of Shokawa-cho, Takayama City, close to Shirakawa Village, it is a valuable building that combines the characteristics of the houses of both areas. In addition, there have been few recent alterations and it is in good condition.
Former Yoshima House
- https://hidanosato.com/facility-introduction/thatched-house-05/
The former Yoshima family home is a sturdy building with a reputation for being able to withstand such a major earthquake, and is composed of the solid foundation and thick pillars, beams, and girders that are unique to areas with heavy snowfall. Among these, the pillars that stand on the four corners of the left and right sides are called “nozoki-bashira” (opposite pillars) with a forked top, and are unique to this region and can only be found in a small area of Hida.
The uniquely shaped roof, known as thatched hip-and-gable roofing, allows light in from the gables (see photo below), making it suitable for work such as raising silkworms on the 2F.
