- 日本飛驒地區白川鄉 (岐阜縣 Gifu大野郡白川村 Shirakawa 荻町 Ogimachi Village) 及五箇山 (富山縣 Toyama 南礪市 Nanto 相倉 Ainokura Village、菅沼 Suganuma Village) 地區的合掌造聚落的總稱，1995 年被聯合國教科文組織登錄為世界文化遺產 The world heritage site consists of three historic mountain villages, Ogimachi, Ainokura and Suganuma, surrounded by the steep forested mountains of the Chubu Region within central Japan.
- 白川鄉是世界遺產註冊的「合掌古建築村落」，完整保留了 100 多棟合掌古建築 Shirakawago Gassho-zukuri Village, which is registered as a The World Heritage Site, has over 100 large and small-size of Gassho-zukuri building.
- 合掌造是指一種日本特有的民宅形式，其特色是以茅草覆蓋的屋頂，呈人字型的屋頂如同雙手合十一般，於是就被稱為「合掌」。合掌造為木造建築物，在興建的過程中完全不用釘子，合掌造的屋頂十分陡峭，這是使積雪容易滑落不會堆積，以避免冬季的大雪將屋頂壓垮 The valley is in a mountain region with considerable snowfall, and these villages are well known for their clusters of farmhouses, constructed in the architectural style known as gasshō-zukuri, which are designed to easily shed snow from their roofs. The Gasshō-style house (“prayer-hands construction” style) is characterized by a steeply slanting thatched roof, resembling two hands joined in prayer.

- 由能登的木匠在 1827 年左右建造 Built by carpenters from Noto around 1827
- 1 層是住宅，2 層至 4 層是蠶的栽培空間，在該層之下，直到 1890 年，製造出用作炸藥原料的鹽硝 The first floor is a residential area, and the second to fourth floor are used for sericulture spaces. Under the floor is the place for gunpowder raw material which was made until 1870.
