「薩摩の小京都」Satsuma’s Little Kyoto

江户後期這裡曾經住過近 500 家的武士們 Chiran is home to more than 500 samurai residences during the late Edo period.
藩政時代建造的知覽武家屋敷保存良好，雅緻懷舊的街景中，長 700 公尺砌築工整的石牆延伸，沿道宅邸庭園整齊排列，街道除了日常生活使用外，還有防御外亂入侵的作用，這裡的街道不寬不窄，也有可以通過一輛馬車的寬度，且街道蜿蜒曲折，即使有外亂入侵也不可能在短時間内熟悉掌握這裡的地形 As the original buildings of the complex are well-preserved, one can get to witness a real, Edo Period Samurai settlement here. The charm of the Chiran Samurai Residence Complex lies in the 700m stonewall-lined paths, the scattered Samurai houses and the beautifully landscaped gardens within. Built with defense purposes in mind, the paths are neither too wide nor too narrow, and there are many corners and bents to reduce visibility (of potential invaders).
“樹籬”也是武士智慧的结晶，起到間隔、防護的作用，從庭院内可以清楚地看到外面，但從外面却無法窺視庭院裡的一切。如有夜間偷襲，還可以有阻擋暗箭的作用 Furthermore, the hedges (behind the stone walls of the houses) are pruned in such a way that one inside the house can see the outside clearly, but not the other way round. As such, it is possible to ambush invaders with arrows and spears without exposing one’s location.

現在残存的武家屋敷群是在佐多氏十八代島津久峯 (1732 – 1772) 時代建造的，宅邸被石垣(牆)隔開、在沖縄常見的石敢當 (辟邪石碑) 和屋敷入口屏風岩 (沖縄のヒンプン)，看步道宅邸內部。知覧港在江戸時代是琉球貿易の據点，因此武家屋敷也深受琉球の影響 The samurai residences that remain today are thought to have been built during the era of the 18th head of the Sata clan, Hisamine Shimazu (1732-1772). The mansions are separated by stone walls, and there are ishiganto (stone monuments to ward off evil), which are often seen in Okinawa, and folding rocks (Okinawan hinpun) at the mansion entrances so that the inside of the mansions cannot be seen. Since the port of Chiran was a base for Ryukyu trade during the Edo period, samurai residences also seem to have been heavily influenced by the Ryukyus.

旧高城家住宅 Former Takagi Residence

明治時代以前所建，設有男玄關與女玄關，屋敷建築所保留的知覧地區傳統建築樣式 The Former Takagi Residence is a samurai residence built before the Meiji period, and has two distinctive features: the “Men’s Entrance” and the “Ladies’ Entrance”.
二つ屋根家屋 Two Roof House
在鹿兒島特有的二屋中，只有在知覽才能看到的二屋有兩個屋頂，屋頂之間有一個小脊 Among the Futatsuya, which is said to be unique to Kagoshima, the Futatsuya, which can only be seen in Chiran, has two roofs with a small ridge between them.
