The sites (506.4 ha) and their surrounding forest landscape reflect a persistent and extraordinarily well-documented tradition of sacred mountains over 1,200 years. The area, with its abundance of streams, rivers and waterfalls, is still part of the living culture of Japan and is much visited for ritual purposes and hiking, with up to 15 million visitors annually. Each of the three sites contains shrines, some of which were founded as early as the 9th century.

This heritage includes temples and pilgrimage routes (Kumano Kodo, Koyasancho Stone Road, and Mine Okuchi Road) across Japan’s Wakayama, Nara and Mie prefectures. It is the only five world heritage sites related to “roads” in the world. . (The other three are the World Heritage Site “Inca Road Network” in Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, Colombia, Chile, and Argentina, the World Heritage Site “Road to Saint James” in Spain, and the World Heritage Site “Santiago de France” in France. “Road to Compostela”, and the World Heritage Site “Silk Road: A Network of Chang’an-Tianshan Corridors”, a World Heritage Site jointly owned by mainland China, Kazakh and Kyrgyzstan.
