Fuketsu Wind Cave

Once you enter the cave, it is pleasantly cool even in summer, with an average temperature of 3 oC. Up until the beginning of the Showa era, it was used as a refrigerator to store the eggs of silkworms. The cave has also been designated as a Japanese natural monument.
The lateral cave is 201 m long and 8.7 m high, and strangely enough, does not produce an audible echo. This is because its basaltic walls act to absorb the sound.
In the course of a 15 minute sight-seeing tour, one can see lava shelves, rope-like lava, and ice pillars that do not melt even in summer.
Ice Pillars
The walls of ice are reminiscent of a culture long ago when natural ice was cut up into blocks and stacked in piles for use as a natural refrigerator.
Lava Shelf
Before the lava completely hardened, its walls would peel away in the shape of a log.
Rope-like Lava
This is where lava has been raised up in a rope-like manner, due to the slower downstream flow of lava being pushed down from the top.
Silkworm and Seed Storage
Until around 1955, the cave served as a storage place for seeds and cocoons that were actually used. In order to keep them from growing, and to preserve good quality seeds for better budding, the cocoons and seeds were kept in cold storage.
Light Moss Colonies
This is a type of moss that is technically called “silicate hana”. It grows on rock walls and has a bluish-white shine. The extensive reflection of silver is said to be unusual.
Lava Pond
This is where lava has melted into ponds, which then cool down, leaving solidified pond formations in their original shape.

Narusawa Hyoketsu Ice Cave

  • https://www.mtfuji-cave.com/en/ice_cave/
The Narusawa Hyoketsu Ice Cave is located at the east entrance to the Aokigahara Jukai “sea of trees” forest, and is regarded as one of the tourist spots within the Fuji Five Lakes area that can be visited throughout the year.
Over 1150 years ago, Nagaoyama, a flank volcano of Mt. Fuji erupted in 864. The red hot lava flow (Aokigahara Maruo) descended between ancient parasitic volcanoes, creating this two-tunnel type cave. After being designated by the Ministry of Education as a natural monument in 1929, it was introduced to the world as a geological wonder. By the way, the tree-type lava bed is said to have the most spiracles in the world.
The Narusawa Hyoketsu Ice Cave and the FugakuFuketsu Wind Cave are typical lava caves at the foot of Mt. Fuji. The ice cave is named so because its internal temperature averages abour 3 oC, and it is covered with ice year-around. The icicles formed by drops of water seeping from the ceiling are especially impressive. They grow to a maximum size about April, and in some years reach gigantic sizes 50 cm in diameter and 3 m high. The ice cave is about 800 m east of the wind cave, and has a ring-like pit shape 153 m long. It is 1.5 m – 11 m wide and 1 m – 3.6 m high. Due to its annular shape, it can be viewed in one circular loop.
Seed Storage Remnants
These remnants were used to preserve silkworm cocoons and seeds. To prevent growth of the cocoons and to preserve the quality of seeds and promote budding, they were stored in a refrigerated environment.
  • 2. 古井 Old Water Well Remnants
This well was actually used before water service came into being.
Lave Tunnel
Remnants of huge trees grew 1,100 years ago. The ceiling is 91 cm high, and you can walk through the tunnel sideways.
Ice Wall
This is a reproduction of an ice storage unit. The wall was formed by piling up blocks of ice. It was used before refrigerators came into being.
Ice Pillars
Water droplets seeping from the ceiling freeze into icicles, which pile up into ice pillars. They are a beautiful, natural work of art. Natural ice forms during winter, and can be seen until about the beginning of the fall season.
