The Goryokaku is a western-style fort completed almost 150 years ago, designated in Japan as a special historic site. Its neighbor the Goryokaku Tower features an Observatory which commands a panoramic view of the entire beautiful star-shaped estate and surrounding moat.
Since 1970, the “Hakodate Goryokaku Festival” has been held every May. Activities include the “Restoration Parade,” featuring performers dressed as former Shogunate soldiers and new government troops from the Battle of Hakodate, and the “Hijikata Toshizo Grand Prix,” where performers imitate Hijikata Toshizo. Furthermore, since 1988, the “Citizen-Created Hakodate Outdoor Theater,” a performance about Hakodate’s history, has been staged on the earthen ramparts and moat of Goryokaku, with performances by citizens participating free of charge. The “Goryokaku Dream,” which illuminates Goryokaku on winter evenings since 1989, remains unchanged to this day.
The moat is surrounded by some 1,600 cherry trees, making the Goryokaku one of Hokkaido’s top cherry blossom viewing spots in springtime. In summer the moat is fringed with lush greenery, which turns into a blazing scene of crimson foliage in the fall that is then blanketed with snow in the winter, creating an extremely beautiful vista for all seasons.
