In the Kotan (village), the Akanko Ainu Theater <Ikor> hosts ancient ceremonial dances and puppet shows, and you can learn about the traditional Ainu lifestyle and culture at the Ainu Living Memorial Hall. We also host fascinating events like Mukkuri (mouth harp) playing sessions to join and oral history performances. There are also tens of traditional craft and souvenir shops, as well as restaurants and coffee shops serving Hokkaido and Ainu cuisine.

As a point of production and sale of traditional crafts which are among Hokkaido’s best-known souvenirs, the Ainu Kotan has been delighting visitors for many years. In particular, master artisans create intricate wood carvings of bears, birds, humans, and the like, which are highly sought around the world as original Ainu art. Another important heritage passed down from our ancestors is the traditional Ainu dance, which is Hokkaido’s only designated important intangible cultural heritage of Japan. As an initiative to create new cultural assets, the Ainu Kotan has dramatized renowned ‘yukar’ oral epic sagas, which have been presented to great acclaim throughout Japan and around the globe at venues including the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.

  • 火把的火焰燃燒旺盛，愛努民族獨特的丸木舟漂蕩在水路上。阿寒湖愛努戲院「Ikor」裡展開了「愛努傳統舞蹈」、「村落的居民們所扮演的人形劇」、「Iomante 火祭」等擁有無比震撼力的傳統藝能表演。舞台後方是往戶外延伸的開放式構造，賦予舞台足夠的縱深 The unique dugout boats of the Ainu float down waterways lit by blazing torches. At the Lake Akan Ainu Theater , we offer powerful traditional performances like ancient ceremonial dances, puppet shows done by Kotan residents, and the Iomante Fire Festival. The back of the stage opens to the outdoors, creating a strong sense of depth for the performances.

  • 北海道依區域的不同，有各式各様愛奴 (Ainu) 傳統舞蹈的歌謡和舞蹈方式。即使同一首歌謡和舞蹈，其内容旋律和舞蹈方式也可能不盡相同。為了讓您更深入地了解在阿寒湖流傳下來的傳統舞蹈，在阿寒湖愛奴劇院「Ikor」，以昔日愛奴 (Ainu) 族由神靈 (Kamuy) 所傳授的祭具 (Inaw) 為主題，向您呈現愛奴的傳統舞蹈 Depending on the region in Hokkaido, traditional Ainu dances vary greatly in terms of the dances themselves and their accompanying songs. Even the same song or dance will have a different rhythm or choreography depending on the performer. To help people more deeply understand these traditional dances (which have been passed down over innumerable generations), at the Lake Akan Ainu Theater , traditional dance is performed by Ainu who take an inau as their motif. An inau is a wooden ritual tool that the kamuy (gods) taught the Ainu how to make.

愛努生活紀念館 Ainu Living Memorial Hall Poncise

  • Pon cise 是愛努語「小小的家」之意。愛努生活紀念館重現了往昔可供 4 – 5 人家庭生活的愛努民房Poncise之風貌，一踏進屋裡，彷彿可聽見一家人圍繞著地爐所燃之火，或談心或祈禱的聲音。這裡展示著述說往時的生活用品和服裝等物品，可供您懷想愛努民族與嚴峻的自然環境共存共生的生活智慧以及生活方式。”Poncise” means “small house” in the Ainu language. The Ainu Living Memorial Hall recreates a traditional Ainu poncise, a home for 4-5 people. When you step inside, it’s almost as if you can hear the stories and prayers of a family huddled around the fire. With its displays of daily items and clothing telling of ancient times, the museum awakens a feeling of yearning for the wisdom and traditional lifestyle of the Ainu people as they lived in harmony with the harsh natural world.

Attended by Ainu people from throughout Hokkaido, the festival features performances such as a torch parade and traditional Ainu dancing.
